Emancipation Day

August 1 All day
August 1st commemorates Emancipation Day in Canada, marking the day in 1834 when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire. This day is about recognizing the history and consequences of enslavement in Canada, while acknowledging the strength and perseverance of Black and Indigenous communities.
Let us take this opportunity to reflect, learn, and engage in continued efforts against both anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination.
