DESCRIPTION:October 18 is Persons Day in Canada. \n\n\n\nIt marks the day in 1929 when the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons” was handed down by Canada’s highest court of appeal. This gave some women the right to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and paved the way for women’s increased participation in public and political life. Though this decision did not include all women\, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent\, it did mark critical progress in the advancement of gender equality in Canada.

It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire. \n\n\n\nCanadians are not always aware that Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved on the land that is now Canada. DESCRIPTION:On July 28\, Canadians mark the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval\, a sad chapter in the history of the Acadian people. \n\n\n\nOn this day in 1755\, British authorities ordered the deportation of French settlers living on lands in New France\, which we know today as Nova Scotia\, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. About 10\,000 Acadians were deported\, separated from their families\, and sent to Anglo-American colonies\, to France or to the Caribbean. Thousands of them never made it to their destination\, succumbing to famine\, disease and the horrific conditions of the voyage. \n\n\n\nDespite the hardships and pitfalls\, the Acadian people rose up through their strength\, courage and determination. Many families returned to settle in Acadia\, and their descendants shine like the gold star on the Acadian flag.
