SUMMARY:International Day of World’s Indigenous People
DESCRIPTION:Violations of the rights of the world’s Indigenous peoples have become a persistent problem\, sometimes because of a historical burden from their colonization backgrounds and others because of the contrast with a constantly changing society. \n\n\n\nIn response to this problem\, let’s remember every August 9 that Indigenous Peoples have the right to make their own decisions and carry them out meaningfully and culturally appropriate to them. \n\n\n\nIn this context of demand for self-determination\, Indigenous youth are working as agents of change at the forefront of some of the most pressing crises facing humanity today. \n\n\n\nFor instance\, Indigenous youth are harnessing cutting-edge technologies and developing new skills to offer solutions and contribute to a more sustainable\, peaceful future for our people and planet. \n\n\n\nBut their future depends as well on the decisions that are made today. Their representation and participation in global efforts towards climate change mitigation\, peacebuilding\, and digital cooperation are crucial for the effective implementation of their rights as indigenous. \n\n\n\nThis International Day of Indigenous Peoples 2023\, under the title of “Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination“\, revindicates the role that indigenous youth must occupy in decision-making while recognizing their dedicated efforts in climate action\, the search for justice for their people\, and the creation of an intergenerational connection that keeps their culture\, traditions\, and contributions alive.

DESCRIPTION:On March 24\, 2021\, the House of Commons voted unanimously to officially designate August 1 Emancipation Day. It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire. \n\n\n\nCanadians are not always aware that Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved on the land that is now Canada. Those who fought enslavement were pivotal in shaping our society to be as diverse as it is today. \n\n\n\nTherefore\, each August 1\, Canadians are invited to reflect\, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination. \n\n\n\nEmancipation Day celebrates the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEmancipation in Canada\n\n\n\nThe Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 ended slavery in the British Empire on 1 August\, 1834\, which laid a pathway to freeing over 800\,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants in parts of the Caribbean\, Africa\, South America as well as Canada. \n\n\n\nFor most enslaved people in British North America\, the Act resulted only in partial liberation. It only freed children under the age of six. Others were to continue serving their former owners for four to six years as apprentices. The Act did however confirm Canada as a free territory for enslaved African Americans. Thousands of African Americans subsequently arrived on Canadian soil between 1834 and the early 1860s.
